As a professional therapist and social worker for the past 33 years at the VA Medical Center, now retired, it has been my distinct honor and privilege to treat a multitude of veterans who served in all wars. From World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, and the Gulf War. The main focus of the treatment and therapy were veterans suffering from posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The treatment consisted of trauma focused therapy, behavioral therapy, psychodynamic therapy and Jungian depth therapy.
Both individual and group therapy were used to treat symptoms and feelings associated with those symptoms and to assist veterans in the recovery process in order to live functional and productive lives. It was necessary in my work to be caring, compassionate, understanding, non-judgmental and knowledgeable regarding the diagnosis of PTSD.
